This cartoon comes from the memorable 1963 AAS-NASA symposium volume, edited by W. N. Hess. It contains any number of wonderful cartoons, almost at the modern level, by other luminaries such as Gold, Petschek, Piddington, Sweet, Sturrock, etc... well worth a look. Carmichael himself was a Canadian cosmic-ray physicist, not a theorist apparently. The ideas in this cartoon laid the groundwork for the CSHKP development, which probably accounts for half the cartoons in this Archive. Probably Giovanelli should have led the list, but that's history for you.
