A cartoon invoking large-scale waves in the Alfven mode as a source of energy transport for a flare, as an explanation for the theoretical problems involved with return current and beam dynamics. This follows an earlier work by Emslie & Sturrock (1982), who did not deign to draw a cartoon.
Note also the similarity with the Uchida-Shibata cartoon, except that the flow of Alfvenic Poynting flux is in the opposite direction.
