A modern version of the standard model that Moore and colleagues have evolved over the years, this one explained in term of a "core field" which may explode somehow, defying the laws of thermodynamics in the process. I'd fault this cartoon by appealing to a "twist buildup" phase. By now (and probably also in 1999) it seems more and more likely that the stress bodily emerges with the field, rather than being imposed later on. The author's M is unfortunately one that is missing from the CSHKP initialization - Ron has always been one of its biggest proponents (see the Shibata page for further details).Jan. 27, 2007
