On the left, one of my favorite cartoons, due to Piddington. This version was scanned from the article by T. Gold in the NASA SP-50 conference proceedings (1961), a rich source of early cartoons. I like it not only because the portrayal of the corona looks interesting, but also for the wonderful equation "jbar = anything" down there in the subphotospheric domain. There is something, well, interesting about the RHS here.The cartoon on the right is a latter-day creation (Piddington, ApJ 233, 727, 1979), included here for clarity.
