This model is one of the central ones of the CSHKP stream, the "rainbow reconnection" model of Somov. It shows how a simple bipolar photospheric ("Ph") field configuration, under velocity shear, can develop an S-shaped neutral line ("NL") implying bald-patch connectivity at the point of symmetry, a configuration frequently used nowadays in numerical simulations of flare/CME development.It is fitting to note that "rainbow reconnection" has produced the first color cartoon in the Archive, at least as of the current date - 23 years later!.
